A Smart Booster Set Upgrade to Keep Critical Hospital Water Flowing with No Downtime.
The Challenge
For a live hospital environment, water supply is not something that can simply be switched off while essential infrastructure is upgraded. In this project, the customer needed to replace two ageing booster sets: one softened water booster set and one raw water booster set, both of which had reached end of life.
The existing systems presented several risks. Key components were no longer fit for purpose, parts of the suction pipework did not comply with current standards, and the existing pumps were non-standard, making future replacement more difficult and increasing the likelihood of extended downtime. For a hospital, that level of disruption was not an option.
The customer needed a solution that would modernise both systems, improve long-term reliability, and most importantly keep the hospital fully operational throughout the works.
The Solution
Dura Pump delivered a carefully planned replacement programme focused on protecting the customer’s operations at every stage. To eliminate downtime, a temporary solution was installed in advance, allowing water services to be maintained while the works were completed overnight.
As part of the project, Dura Pump replaced the discharge isolation valves, supported the installation works, and supplied and installed two new triple booster sets. One of these included a variable speed Dura Pump 11kW triple booster set, designed to meet current demand while offering greater efficiency and control.
This modern variable speed arrangement was selected to give the customer a more responsive and energy-efficient solution. By maintaining constant pressure regardless of demand fluctuations, the system reduces stress on pipework and valves while delivering a more stable water supply across the hospital. The Hydrovar X controls also provide straightforward programming, maximum pump efficiency, and the ability to communicate with the building management system.
For the second booster set, the focus was on replacing outdated and non-compliant elements with a modern, dependable system that would allow easier maintenance, better monitoring, and access to standard, widely available replacement parts in the future.
The Outcome
The result for the customer was a successful infrastructure upgrade with no interruption to hospital operations. Thanks to the temporary solution and overnight working programme, the hospital maintained continuous water supply throughout the installation, avoiding the eight-hour downtime that would otherwise have been required.
The customer now benefits from two modern booster systems that are built to support the hospital reliably for years to come. The upgraded equipment provides constant pressure, improved flexibility to meet changing demand, and greater overall energy efficiency. The use of standard, widely available pumps and components also makes ongoing maintenance simpler and helps reduce future downtime risks.
By replacing end-of-life equipment with robust, modern booster technology, Dura Pump has helped secure the long-term resilience of the hospital’s water services, giving the customer confidence that this critical part of the building infrastructure is ready for the future.
