Chilled Secondary Pump Overhaul for Data Centre
The Challenge
During a routine service visit, engineers identified that a secondary chilled water pump serving the data centre’s cooling circuit was leaking. A leaking pump on a secondary chilled water loop is a serious concern in a data centre environment. If left unaddressed, it risks a loss of chilled water pressure and volume across the circuit, directly threatening the cooling capacity that protects the data hall’s IT load. A full overhaul was recommended to return the pump to service rather than risk an unplanned failure.
The Solution
- Engineers attended site, safely isolated the circuit and removed the inline pump for workshop attention.
- In the workshop, the pump was fully dismantled and inspected to confirm the extent of wear.
- The pump was rebuilt using a mechanical seal kit, gasket/O-ring kit, motor bearing kit and a pump shaft re-sleeve.
- Engineers reattended site to install the overhauled pump, complete all mechanical and electrical connections, and test and commission the unit.
The Outcome
The pump was returned to full, reliable operation, with the secondary chilled water circuit restored to its designed capacity.
- No unplanned loss of cooling capacity to the data hall.
- A single point of contact managed removal, workshop overhaul and reinstallation, minimising coordination and disruption for the client.
- The pump was rebuilt to original specification rather than simply replaced, extending its working life.
