Chilled Water System Transformation: From Inefficiency to Intelligently Controlled Energy Savings

The Challenge

During a site visit at a UK Science Museum, some critical issues were identified within the chilled water system, serving their major plant room.

The key challenges identified were:

  • Deteriorating system condition impacting reliability and performance
  • End-of-life components that were no longer supported by the original manufacturer, increasing risk of failure and maintenance difficulty
  • Inefficient operation of inverter-driven systems, with existing inverters running at a fixed speed rather than responding to system demand.

These factors combined to create a system that was inefficient, increasingly unreliable and unable to deliver optimal performance or energy savings.

The Solution

A tailored upgrade solution was recommended to address the specific challenges identified.

The solution included:

  • Replacement of pumps, inverters and sensors where necessary to modernise the system
  • Reprogramming of existing inverters on selected systems, enabling them to operate on demand rather than fixed speed
  • Integration of intelligent controls, ensuring all systems are managed locally via inverters and sensors
  • Continued communication with the Building Management System (BMS), maintaining visibility and control for site operators.

This approach ensured cost-effective upgrades while maximising the use of existing infrastructure.

The Outcome

The upgraded system now delivers a range of operational and financial benefits:

  • Improved reliability and uptime, reducing the risk of unexpected failures
  • Increased energy efficiency, leading to measurable cost savings
  • Enhanced system performance, supporting consistent delivery of operational demands
  • Reduced downtime, improving overall system resilience
  • Lower carbon footprint, contributing to sustainability goals
  • Reduced noise levels within the plant room environment
  • 24-month warranty on pumps and installation for added assurance
  • Guaranteed spares availability for a minimum of 10 years, ensuring long-term maintainability.
  • Achieves full ROI in three years.

Overall, the solution provides our customer with greater peace of mind, ensuring the museum’s critical systems operate efficiently, reliably and sustainably well into the future.
