Cold Water Booster Set for London Teaching Hospital

The Challenge

A major teaching hospital in London was experiencing problems with its cold-water system, leading to insufficient and inconsistent water pressure. A more reliable solution capable of responding effectively to variations in demand was needed. The issue was caused by the hospital installing new sensor taps which required a higher pressure than the original taps.

Dura Pump was asked to assess the system, create the specification and scope of work needed. This scope of work included providing and installing two new booster systems that would improve pressure throughout the hot and cold-water system while offering greater flexibility and efficiency. The proposed equipment also needed to be suitable for the existing tank fed system, which was confirmed as being capable of operating at pressures of up to 3.0 bar.

The Solution

The first part of the Dura Pump solution was to change the design of the current tank fed system to operate at a higher pressure with the booster sets. This included, adding pressure relief valves on the four hot water calorifiers.

Dura Pump specified two 3.0kW variable speed triple booster sets, designed specifically to meet the requirements of the site’s cold-water system.

The solution incorporated three variable-speed Lowara pumps operating in parallel, together with pressure transmitters, pressure vessels, stainless-steel suction and discharge manifolds, isolation and non-return valves and an integrated control panel. The Hydrovar X pump controllers were selected to regulate the pumps efficiently and maintain consistent pressure as flow requirements changed.

Dura Pump’s engineers conducted the installation, including connecting and running new pipework to the existing system, installing safety relief valves, making electrical connections to the booster set control panel, supplying the required fixings and gaskets, programming the controls, and testing and commissioning the completed system. The system was also chlorinated following the final connections to ensure it was ready for use.

Careful planning was required around the final connection works which was conducted overnight. The water supply was temporarily isolated while the new equipment was connected.

The Outcome

The new variable-speed booster sets provide the water system with constant, controlled pressure, even when demand and flow rates fluctuate.

By using inverter-controlled pumps, the system can automatically adjust its operation to match demand, providing greater flexibility while helping the pumps operate as efficiently as possible.

The result is a fully automatic booster solution that delivers improved hot and cold-water pressure, more consistent system performance and an efficient response to changing water demand. This was delivered to the hospital with minimum disruption to site facilities.
