Energy-Efficient Pump Upgrade Delivers 65% Reduction in Energy Consumption
The Challenge
During a site assessment, we identified a significant opportunity to improve the efficiency and reliability our hospital customer’s pump systems.
The existing infrastructure consisted of ageing belt-driven pumps which were inefficient and had reached end of life. With the equipment now obsolete and OEM replacement parts no longer available, maintaining the pumps was becoming increasingly costly and time-consuming.
We also identified fixed-speed pumps operating continuously regardless of system demand. The result was unnecessary energy use, higher running costs and an avoidable environmental impact.
With the existing system still required to maintain the necessary pump capacity, the challenge was to modernise the installation without compromising performance.
The Solution
Dura Pump proposed replacing the ageing equipment with a modern, energy-efficient pump and control solution designed to maintain existing system capacity while significantly reducing energy consumption.
The upgrade included:
- Two 2.2kW end-suction pumps with high-efficiency motors
- Two 2.2kW, 400V variable-speed inverters
- New pressure sensors
- Associated pipework modifications
- New pump baseplates
- Electrical and mechanical installation
- Full system configuration, testing and commissioning
The introduction of variable-speed inverters allows the pumps to respond intelligently to system demand rather than continuously operating at fixed speed. This means the system only uses the energy it needs, reducing unnecessary pump operation while maintaining the required pressure and performance.
Following installation, Dura Pump engineers configured the new controls, tested and commissioned the complete system. The customer was then able to integrate the new controls into the existing BMS.
The Outcome
The new system is projected to reduce energy consumption from the circulator pumps by approximately 65%, delivering a substantial improvement in overall system efficiency.
Based on the energy assessment, the upgrade is expected to achieve:
20,323 kWh annual energy saving
£4,064.64 annual energy cost saving
Alongside the direct financial savings, the customer benefits from replacing obsolete equipment with modern, supportable technology, reducing the risk of costly breakdowns and difficulties sourcing replacement parts.
For buildings operating ageing fixed-speed or belt-driven pumps, an energy assessment can identify where relatively straightforward upgrades can deliver measurable savings while improving the long-term reliability of critical pumping systems.
