Hitchingbrooke Hospital – LTHW Pump Replacement

The Challenge

Hitchingbrooke Hospital faced a critical issue with its Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) pump system. The existing system was experiencing bearing failures, leading to unreliable heating and hot water services throughout the hospital. This presented a significant risk to patient comfort, operational efficiency and potentially critical medical processes reliant on stable temperature control. After assessment it was determined that two like-for-like pump replacements were necessary. The specified pumps were Grundfos TP150 – 340 – 30KW models, essential for maintaining the system’s capacity and performance. The challenge was made more complicated by the location of the existing pumps, which presented logistical challenges for the removal of the old units and the installation of the new replacements.

The Solution

To address the failing LTHW pump system, a replacement strategy was implemented. This involved the procurement of two brand new Grundfos TP150 – 340 – 30KW pumps, ensuring a match in specifications to the existing units. This “like-for-like” approach minimised the need for extensive system modifications and ensured seamless integration with the existing infrastructure.

Recognising the complex access challenges presented by the existing pumps, a specialist advanced lifting company was commissioned. Their expertise was crucial in safely and efficiently moving the large and heavy pumps into their designated positions. This involved the use of specialised lifting equipment, and adherence to strict safety protocols to ensure no disruption to the hospital’s ongoing operations.

The Outcome

The replacement of the two LTHW pumps at Hitchingbrooke Hospital delivered the following outcomes:

  • Restored Reliability: The hospital’s heating and hot water services were fully restored to a reliable and consistent operational standard, eliminating the previous issues.
  • Enhanced Efficiency: The new pumps, operating at optimal performance will contribute to improved system efficiency, potentially leading to long-term energy savings.
  • Operational Continuity: The successful and timely replacement ensured minimal disruption to the hospital’s critical functions, maintaining patient care and staff productivity.
  • Long-Term Durability: The installation of new, high-quality Grundfos pumps provides Hitchingbrooke Hospital with a robust and durable LTHW system.

This project successfully mitigated a critical operational risk, ensuring that Hitchingbrooke Hospital can continue to provide a comfortable and safe environment for its patients and staff, supported by a fully functional and reliable heating and hot water system.
