A Modern Makeover Undermined by Ageing Infrastructure

The Challenge

On behalf of the landlords, we were called to inspect a wastewater pump station servicing a 10,000 sq ft city office block in London. The building was undergoing a major refurbishment and while the visible surfaces were being transformed into a sleek, modern workspace, the building’s wastewater pump station, a vital piece of infrastructure was on its last legs.

After 20 years of service with no regular maintenance, the following problems had developed:

  • One of the two pumps had completely failed, placing the entire load on a single, ageing unit.
  • The pump start relay was broken, preventing automatic operation.
  • The high-level alarm system was non-functional, meaning there was no warning system of failure.

The station had already flooded on several occasions causing messy and hazardous issues.

The Solution

Dura Pump recommended a full system overhaul as a simple repair was not an option. Firstly, the pit had to be completely drained and cleaned and the existing pump station decommissioned. Our engineers systematically removed every component of the old station: the failed pumps, corroded pipework, seized valves, unreliable float switches and the outdated control panel.

Our engineers then installed a brand-new pump station designed for reliability and modern building management.

Technical Specification of the New System:

Our solution was built around robust, high-performance components:

  • Pumps: Two Lowara DOMO GRI 1.5kW 415V submersible grinder pumps were installed. These powerful units are designed to handle the demanding wastewater needs of a commercial office block with ease.
  • Infrastructure: The system was rebuilt with heavy-duty PVC pipework, non-return valves, and galvanised guide rails, ensuring durability and simplifying future maintenance.
  • BMS (Building Management System) connections for seamless integration into the building’s central control system.

Our certified engineers handled all mechanical and electrical connections before rigorously testing and commissioning the entire station, ensuring it was performing perfectly.

The Outcome

A Smart, compliant, and future-proof system. With the project complete, the building is now supported by a reliable wastewater system worthy of its prestigious London address. The risk of flooding has been eliminated, replaced by peace of mind.

This smart refurbished office block now has an upgraded and modernised wastewater system that is not only safe and compliant but is a genuine asset, ready to serve the building and its new tenants for decades to come.
