The Challenge
A sixth form college emailed us with a serious issue: a failed LTHW heating pump. Located on the roof of the building, the defective pump was an Armstrong fitted with an IVS variable speed drive twin head pump. The key challenges were accessibility, due to the positioning on the roof, and ensuring the replacement pump provided reliability for years to come.
The Solution
To fulfil the requirement for a reliable replacement chose to install a Grundfos TPED; a variable speed twin head pump in place of the previous Armstrong. This replacement pump was specified to provide ultimate compatibility with the system and ensure minimal maintenance and repairs in the future.
In order to guarantee smooth operations and enhanced site safety, we used a stair climber to remove the old equipment off site and transported the new pump system to the pump room. Ensuring all pipework spaces were fabricated before we attended the site was a key planning strategy that allowed the Grundfos pump to be installed correctly in the existing system with no issues or delays. By taking these measures, we were able to minimise downtime on site and also removed the need of any hot work which presents additional unnecessary risks.

The Outcome
As a result, the Dura Pump team successfully installed a modern replacement heating pump that was powered by highly efficient IE5 motors. This energy efficient pump system will help the sixth form college meet their sustainability goals, guaranteeing reduced energy consumption and minimal stress and wear to the pump. Most importantly though, our rapid and reliable repair posed no disruption to the operational running of the sixth form – an all round success!
