Operational Continuity: Managing Unflushable Waste Challenges in an NHS Hospital
The Challenge
Effective hospital waste disposal and waste management in a hospital are essential to prevent avoidable wastewater failures. A large NHS hospital was experiencing persistent and severe blockages at its main wastewater pump station due to unflushable items entering the system.
An immediate intervention was required to clear the blockages and restore pumping capacity. However, with wastewater system reliability critical to patient care, infection control, and day-to-day hospital operations, the site also required a long-term, intelligent, and automated solution that would not only manage the issue but eliminate it entirely.
The Solution
Dura Pump recommended the installation of its advanced Velocity Sentinam System, specifically engineered to address severe solids handling and ragging challenges in demanding environments such as NHS healthcare facilities, where hospital waste disposal issues can quickly overwhelm conventional wastewater pumping arrangements.
While the hospital progresses toward full implementation of the Sentinam System, Dura Pump delivered a rapid interim solution to stabilise the site. This included sourcing and installing a hire pump in the short term and providing suction tanker support to clear the huge build up of unflushables. Three new pumps were then installed to replace the existing arrangement, which consisted of the one hired unit, one failed pump and one pump suffering from persistent performance issues.
To ensure the effectiveness of the new installation, a tanker was arranged to fully clean and clear the wet well prior to commissioning the replacement pumps. This immediate intervention restored system functionality and significantly reduced the risk of further failures.
The interim solution enabled the hospital to begin addressing the root causes of the blockages, delivering:
- Reduced downtime caused by pump failures.
- Improved handling and breakdown of incoming materials contributing to blockages.
- A significantly lower risk of emergency blockages and unplanned system failure.
This transitional approach provided immediate operational relief while supporting the hospital’s move toward a fully engineered, long-term solution.
The Outcome
With the temporary installation of the new pumps, the hospital has already seen clear and measurable improvements:
- A noticeable reduction in blockages due to the chamber cleanse.
- Improved system reliability, reducing unplanned maintenance requirements and operational pressure on estates teams.
- More resilient hospital waste disposal performance, reducing the operational risk caused by unflushable waste entering the system.
The hospital can now transition to the new fully integrated Velocity Sentinam solution. Once fully implemented, the system will deliver long-term resilience, improved operational continuity and greater protection for critical healthcare services.
