Macerator Systems for a Flooded Men’s Prison
The Challenge
The justice system typically operates in large-scale areas, with buildings typically designed to cater for hundreds, and in some cases even thousands of staff, site visitors and service users. Dura Pump were recently called upon to work in such an environment following a request from a Category C Men’s Prison based in England.
Housing over 1,000 inmates, the prison experienced a failure in their existing Sulzer macerator systems due to a flood. Dura Pump were called out to see what could be done to resolve this issue, helping the prison return to its normal operations as soon as possible.
The existing macerators were powered by IP55 rated motors. These systems flooded due to the fact that the pump station after them was faulty, causing waste to back up and flood them.
The Solution
Following initial conversations with the customer, Dura Pump visited the prison to take measurements and photographs, as well as to make brief concept sketches. After all consultations were completed, it was quickly recognised that the prison would need a powerful replacement for their macerator systems.
With the challenge in mind, the Dura Pump team specified and supplied two brand new Sulzer macerator systems which were both powered by IP68 rated motors. With these more powerful motors, the prison was assured of a system that could operate efficiently even when submerged in water.
Our work didn’t end there. Once our engineering team had completed the installation of the new macerator systems, they carried out extensive checks throughout the pump system to make recommendations to improve reliability in the future.
The Outcome
The completion of this project marked yet another successful job carried out by Dura Pump on behalf of a large public sector organisation.
With a new set of durable, effective and highly innovative macerators, the prison was able to proceed in confidence that even if their new system flooded, they would still continue to work.
