Pump Upgrade Delivers Energy Savings, Improved Reliability and Fast ROI

The Challenge

Following a detailed site visit several critical issues were identified across the museum’s heating, chilled water and condenser pump systems.

The systems assessed spanned across three plantrooms and they were operating with a number of ageing pump systems, some of which included components that were end of life and no longer supported by the original manufacturer. This created a growing risk around reliability, spares availability, unplanned downtime and long-term maintenance.

A further issue was that, although some systems already had inverters installed, they were running at a fixed speed rather than responding to actual system demand. This meant the museum was not benefitting from the full energy-saving potential of variable speed control.

With pumps running at fixed frequency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the systems were consuming more electricity than necessary and increasing the site’s operational costs and carbon footprint.

The Solution

Dura Pump recommended a phased upgrade approach tailored to each plant room and pump system.

The solution included replacing pumps, inverters and sensors where required. On selected systems, Dura Pump proposed retaining the existing inverters and reprogramming them to work with new pressure sensors, allowing the pumps to operate based on demand rather than at a fixed speed.

By the end of the works, all upgraded systems would be controlled locally by inverters and sensors, while still providing the required information back to the site’s BMS.

The Outcome

By implementing the recommended upgrades, the museum would benefit from improved system reliability, increased energy efficiency and a more future-proof pump installation.

Key benefits include:

  • Improved reliability and uptime across critical plant
  • Reduced risk from end-of-life equipment
  • Increased efficiency and lower electricity usage
  • Reduced downtime and maintenance risk
  • Improved performance across heating, chilled water and condenser systems
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Reduced plant room noise
  • 24-month warranty on pumps and installation
  • Spares availability for at least the next 10 years
  • Continued BMS visibility for site teams

Combined ROI and Energy Savings

Across both proposed upgrade packages, the museum could achieve combined annual savings of:

96,973.20 kWh per year

This equates to an estimated annual cost saving of:

£24,243.30 per year

Based on the combined annual saving, the overall estimated payback period is approximately:

2.62 years.

Summary

The museum was operating with ageing pump systems, end-of-life components and fixed-speed operation that was limiting efficiency and increasing running costs.

Dura Pump’s proposed solution replaces and upgrades key pump systems, introduces demand-led control through inverters and sensors, and improves long-term reliability while maintaining BMS visibility for the site team.

With estimated combined savings of 96,973.20 kWh per year, annual electricity savings of £24,243.30, and an overall estimated payback of approximately 2.62 years, the project offers a strong return on investment while supporting the museum’s wider energy reduction and carbon saving objectives.
