Rapid Response to Critical Heating Failure at a West Midlands NHS Trust
The Problem
A large NHS hospital in the West Midlands experienced a significant failure in its Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) heating system. A sudden pipework leak caused extensive water damage to the primary circulation pumps, leading to failure. The incident occurred outside of standard operational hours, placing the hospital’s heating and hot water services at immediate risk. The hospital required an urgent resolution to prevent disruption to patient care and critical clinical services.
The Solution
Upon receiving the out-of-hours emergency call, our team responded immediately. A site assessment confirmed that the existing pumps and their associated inverters were beyond repair and required complete replacement.
Using our technical expertise and extensive supplier network, our team identified and sourced compatible high-efficiency pumps and new inverters that same evening. By securing the essential equipment overnight, we ensured no time was lost waiting for parts. Our engineers were on-site the next day to begin the replacement. The work involved the safe isolation and removal of the failed units, minor pipework modifications to accommodate the new pumps, and the complete installation and commissioning of the new hardware.
The Outcome
By the afternoon of the following day, less than 24 hours after the initial emergency call, the hospital’s LTHW heating system was fully commissioned and returned to normal operation. Our swift response and technical proficiency in sourcing and installing the correct components under pressure, minimised system downtime and completely avoided any impact on the hospital’s operations. The client was provided with a reliable and efficient new system, averting a potential major incident.
