EU IE3 energy efficiency: From 1 January 2017, energy efficiency class IE3 will apply to motors from 0,75 kW to 375 kW.
All motors sold in the EU must be rated at IE3 efficiency unless connected to a variable-speed drive, in which case an IE2 motor is acceptable.

Why?
The European Union has introduced the EU IE3 energy efficiency directive to make sure all pumps are of premium efficiency.
With 70% of industry electricity consumption directly attributed to electric motors, the EU commission and UK Government forecast a total reduction of around 1 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
What does this mean to me?
Nothing, until you need to replace a motor. When your motor does fail, you will need to ensure the replacement complies with the above details.
All companies must comply with new legislation or risk high costs upgrading motors at a later date.
Only motors in the power range from 7.5 to 375 kW complying with Energy Efficiency Class IE3 will be permitted for line operation in the European Economic Area from now on.
The increase in capital cost will be offset by the reduction in running cost over the lifecycle of the high efficiency motor.
