How Have Rising Energy Costs Impacted the Cost of Running Heating Pumps?

With energy costs rising throughout the world, businesses and organisations face a common challenge in meeting their pump running costs. In the latest blog from Dura Pump, we set out how the increased price of electricity has impacted the running costs of heating pumps, as well as other pumps you may have in your facility.

It’s true: costs are rising across all sectors of industry, and these costs include energy bills, high material prices and more. The rise in prices has seen some of our larger clients in the manufacturing sectors reporting increased electrical bills from £250,000 to an eye watering £600,000 a month. Indeed, whilst many of our clients used to pay between 8p-12p p/kW electricity, they are now paying between 28p-45p/kW. With these challenges in-mind, the need to run pumps as efficiently as possible is more crucial than ever.

We’ve set out some examples below which show the increased cost of running pumps at present. Keep reading to learn more.

Example #1: A 1.1 Kilowatt Heating Pump

A 1.1kW heating pump running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (8760 hours per year) uses approximately 9,636kWh of electricity.

At the old running cost of 10p per kWh (9,363kWh x 10p), our customers paid roughly £963.60 per year.

At the new running cost of 35p per kWh (9,363kWh x 35p), our customers are now paying roughly £3661.86 per year.

This equates to a real-term increase of roughly £2,698.08 per year.

Example #2: A 4.0 Kilowatt Heating Pump

A 4.0kW heating pump running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (8760 hours per year) uses around 35,404 kWh of electricity.

At the old running cost of 10p per kWh (35,040kWh x 10p), our customers paid roughly £3,504.00 per year.

At the new running cost of 35p per kWh (35,040kWh x 35p), our customers are now paying roughly £13,315.20 per year.

This equates to a real-term increase of roughly £9,811.20 per year.

Example #3: 18.5 Kilowatt Heating Pump

A 18.5kW heating pump running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (8760 hours per year) uses around 162,060 kWh of electricity.

At the old running cost of 10p per kWh (162,060kWh x 10p), our customers paid roughly £16,206.00 per year.

At the new running cost of 35p per kWh (35,040kWh x 35p), our customers are now paying roughly £56,721.00 per year.

This equates to a real-term increase of roughly £40,512.00 per year.

Example #4: 55.0 kilowatt Heating Pump

A 55.0kW heating pump running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (8760 hours per year) uses around 481,800 kWh of electricity

At the old running cost of 10p per kWh (481,800kWh x 10p), our customers paid roughly £48,180.00 per year.

At the new running cost of 35p per kWh (481,800kWh x 35p), our customers are now paying roughly £168,630 per year.

This equates to a real-term increase of roughly 120,450 per year per year.
