Understanding Pressure Conversion Rates

Working within the pump industry, we often come across a range of different units used to measure the pressure or duty of a pump. However, we understand that understanding these measurements can be a challenge. To make this a little bit easier for our customers, we’re sharing a quick breakdown. Check it out!

Below we have set out the most common units of measurement we come across:

  • 1 bar = 100kpa
  • 1 bar = 14.5psi
  • 1 bar = 10 metres head
  • 1 bar = 33 feet head
  • 1 metres head = 10kpa
  • 1 metre = 3.3ft
  • 1 metres head = 0.1 bar
  • Let’s take a look at an example which would put these measurements into practice.

For instance, let’s say you’re dealing with a pipeline that needs to lift the water up by 20m. Without taking into account any friction loss, the pump would have to produce a minimum of 2 bars to simply discharge the water at the other end.
Alternatively, if you are replacing a pump with a duty of 120 kpa, the new pump would need to have a required head of 12 metres or 1.2 bar.

We hope that makes sense. To access more guidance around pump use and operation, visit our blog or learning resources section
