What Size of Pump Station and Pump Do I Need?

Here at Dura Pump, we understand that knowing the exact size of pump station and pump you need can be a challenge. Fortunately, we’re making this decision-making process easier than ever in our latest blog, breaking down those key points you need to consider before arriving at a purchasing decision. Thank us later!

Before making any big decisions on pump station sizes, it is critical that you understand what is feeding into it. There are two main differences here: sewage water versus storm water. If you’re trying to specify a sewage pump station, for example, it is recommended that you allow 24-hour storage below the lowest invert (inlet into the tank). By taking this measure, you can ensure that your site can continue to be used while the issue is fixed.

How to Calculate the Size of Your Pump Station

To calculate the size of your pump station tank you need to know three key things:

  • What is your building/buildings used for?
  • How many people are in the building?
  • What is the depth of your lowest invert?

For example, it is recommended for residential dwellings that 150litres of storage is allowed per person, and a house with 4 bedrooms would be specified for having 6 people. Therefore, 6 x 150 = 900 litres below invert. Simple!

This example particularly applies to housing and can vary for different types of buildings. The usage and activities on varying sites will also determine the size of the tank (for example, a food factory washing produce will need a lot more storage than a logistics warehouse with the same number of staff).

Meanwhile, for a storm water pump station, the storage time will also depend on 3 key elements:

  • The run of area;
  • Discharge consent; and
  • Whether or not an attenuation tank is used.
  • What Info Do I Need to Calculate the Size of a Pump Station Pump?

To calculate to size pump you need within the pump station to discharge the fluid to the main sewer or discharge point, the following information is required:

  • Fluid being pumped
  • Cover level of the pump station
  • Lowest invert into the pump station
  • Length of the rising main
  • Highest point on the rising main
  • Discharge point height or IL
  • Any discharge consent

From this, the total head (including friction loss of the pump system) can be calculated and the correct pump specified. If you have an existing rising main the diameter of this will also be required.
