Share this postWhy It’s Important To Service Your Pump Station Every Six Months
Servicing a pump station – whether it be a sewage or storm pump station – is critical to ensuring it is well maintained and functioning correctly. Regular pump station servicing helps reduce blockages, prevent float and control failures, and lowers the risk of flooding or emergency call-outs.
Generally, it’s advised that a pump station is serviced once a year minimum, but the regularity of a service will depend on the usage, demand and how critical the pump station is to the establishment. The right pump station servicing schedule is usually based on how often the station runs, the type of wastewater handled, and the consequences of failure on-site.
As we’ve said before in our blogs: “a stitch in time saves nine”, a quote that’s very applicable to pump station servicing. For example, a failed float switch found on a service would cost around £70 to replace at the time, but if left, it could potentially cause damage to the pumps or flooding to the system which could end up costing thousands of pounds in repairs or tankering.
On average, a pump station normally needs to be serviced every six months to ensure long term reliability. This will reduce the chance of needing a call out or having a breakdown on the pump system. In some critical applications, however, such as high flood risk areas or heavy industry plant pump stations, monthly services and daily or weekly inspections from on-site personnel would be necessary.
How Often Does My Pump Station Need Servicing?
Pump station servicing frequency depends on your history of call-outs, the duty cycle, and how critical the station is to operations.
There is not one answer to this, because as already discussed, each individual application can vary. However, as stated the minimal requirement is a full service once a year. The way to gauge how often you should service a pump station is to look back at you records to see how often you have had call outs or issues with it, for example;
1. If you have had no call outs in a year and the system has been working fine, then a service once a year should be sufficient.
2. If your pump station only has one or two call outs per year but is highly critical to your operation, you may want to consider six monthly or quarterly services to avoid any failures.
3. If you’ve had six call outs in a year and the pump is constantly blocking up, then a quarterly service would be advisable (if this is the case, you may want to check the specification of the pump station you have).

Ensure that when a full service takes place on your pump station that the pumps are raised out of the pit and cleaned as part of the service – as shown in our video below. This hands-on inspection is one of the most valuable parts of pump station servicing because it exposes early wear, ragging build-up, and faults that aren’t visible from the surface.
